How is life sailing, folks? I know how hard you are trying to make a healthy flow of money by writing online, but most you have scanty success to show for your endeavours. Well, I had recently taken a leap of faith, by hanging up on my 9–5 job, to dive deep into the world of making money by writing online.
After a few months of hiccups, I feel I am starting to crack the code of earning by writing articles. Now, when I look back at my bumpy ride of the past few weeks, I realize the one mistake I made, which stopped me from earning big money by writing online. So here I am, to share the strategy that worked for me, which may or may not prove useful to you, depending upon your vantage point.
Now there are two types of people who try to make money by writing articles online.
Type 1 are the freelancers, who would happily put their hard-earned skills to use for their clients. They don’t get a lot of freedom to frame an article the way they want but enjoys the advantage of not having to ponder too much about what they should write about. Just follow the lead of your client and they will churn out money for writing articles. For all those who were rotting in a regular desk-job, this would feel like a whole new world of freedom, a more comfortable way of making money by writing.
Type 2 are those who own a blog or website, who don’t mind learning the intricacies of maintaining them. They live the dream of a possible Adsense approval in the future and visits to their site converting into dollars. The sky is not even the limit for them. All it takes is one idea, one post to go viral and their earnings will be off the roof.
The potential to earn money by writing articles is nearly unlimited here, whether you are type1 or type 2, or a bit of both. I had begun enthusiastically, both freelancing and making a website, with nothing much to show, until I realized the mistake I made. I soon changed them and the results started to show up instantly. But my advice here is specifically for those who own a website or blog to earn money online and not for freelancers.
The One Mistake that’s Stopping You From Earning Big Money Online
How often have you been sold this idea that inorder to earn money by writing online, you have to write about a topic that you are an expert at? Well, its wrong, unless the area of your expertise coincides with what people want to read. Certain topics drive huge traffic like for instance, a good share of successful articles on Medium is about how to make money through Medium! An article built around this niche has a better chance to succeed, especially if you are a beginner.
Now, If you are hoping to write something that deeply concerns you and then share it among your friends and a few Facebook groups, you are not going to grow beyond a point. This might work if you are a celebrity or an incredibly cute guy or girl, so much so that the world will drool over everything you do. If that’s the case, feel free to open up about everything you own in your wardrobe or how your puppy eats pedigree or how you changed the tires of your grandpa’s car. But if you are not in that league, try and see what the world is searching for, and write exactly what they want. But you can also strike a balance in your article, between what you want to write and what readers wish to read.
So you like to write about how much you were worried when your fish died, or how terrified you were when your car battery died on a lonely road. Chances are good that there are only very few souls out there who would empathetically listen to your tale. So I would suggest you rush to some keyword tool(Google Keyword planner might just be enough, but there are plenty of other free and paid tools which are better) and start putting in your keywords there.
In the two cases I mentioned, Pet fish, Beta Fish, Car Battery, etc could be your keywords to input, and the keyword generator tools will happily spill the top keywords on the topic. It will also show the monthly visits on each keyword, so that you can choose one with a high volume of visits and low competition.
Now start stuffing your keywords carefully into your title and the body of the article, without overdoing it on purpose, and you would have already improved your chances. But for it to be perfect, you will have to get better at SEO(Search Engine Optimisation). It’s not rocket science and a day with some free tutorial would make you feel like you already own the concept.
With Keyword Research, Instead of “How Lost I Was When My Pet Fish Died”, what you might end up with is “Pet Fish Care: The Truth I Learned From My Experience”(Just guessing, I haven’t tried the Keyword tool for Pet fish yet).
The article, instead of only focusing on your personal experience, should be a mix of good knowledge that helps the readers, while you can nicely slip in your feelings. It should be a better world of both. Educate your audience something they would cherish, a tip they would be thankful for while convincing them with your words, how much you loved the fish.
Well, if you have done proper SEO and if you chose a keyword that’s high on popularity, you would have tremendously improved your odds of making money with your article. If you are a proper ‘writer’, you may not enjoy the idea of sacrificing style for SEO, being forced to repeat the same set of words a few times throughout, but that’s the hard pill you have to swallow.
I did a few articles with good keyword research and happy clients are flocking back in numbers. I am gearing up to resurrect my long-forgotten website and apply the newly learnt lessons there. This time when I write, I won’t think about what I want to write, but I would learn and write on the topic the readers want to know more about. I guess that’s the sacrifice you have to make to earn a little more money online.
Well, If you are someone who is already earning a fortune by pouring your feelings out, I apologize, what I have written is not for you. But I couldn’t stop myself from writing this article, since the results after I changed my strategy, were almost instantaneous.
