Kerala, the southern-most state of India, is a blessed piece of land in multiple ways. Abundant resources, lush and green spots that translate you into a meditative mood, comfy climate, the first recipient of south-west monsoon in India and the list goes on.
It is for these good reasons that this geographical area is rightly crowned as God’s Own Country. But a piece of deeply disturbing news has emerged from this land, and it’s going to make you wonder if God was caught napping while it happened.
It is an instance of unmatched cruelty, done to a pregnant wild elephant, by presumably a heartless local or a bunch of hooligans. Someone had fed the pregnant elephant a pineapple filled with firecrackers inside.
The 15-year-old elephant belonged to the Silent Valley National Park. It had come out in search of food, to ensure that her young one stays healthy inside. She was noted for her mild manners, something that you normally may not associate with a wild elephant.
She didn’t create chaos anywhere, probably being extra careful for the baby she was carrying. But someone had managed to feed her a pineapple with the cracker, it exploded inside her mouth. Even after the blast, the elephant did not lose her composure. She went to the river and silently stood there, hoping to let the water cool the burns of the explosion.
Mohan Krishnan, Section Forest Officer, Nilambur, brought the incident to public attention. He and his team had attempted to rescue the elephant, but she died in the river, in a standing position, while her trunk was floating in the river. The officials were trying to save her by using a couple of other rescue elephants, but before their attempts could take flight, she had passed away and so did the baby inside her.
The doctor who conducted the post mortem said he was so moved when he could hold the foetus in his hands.
According to the forest official, it was on May 23 that they got a tip about a wandering elephant. The elephant, after being injured, spent an entire day looking for water to cool herself. By the time she was found, the officials had hoped to revive her, but then her wounds were exposed for long and she was too weak and unable to move.
In this part of the world, firecrackers are used by people to catch wild boars, which can potentially threaten the vegetation.
The mother elephant must have dearly hoped to see her calf, and she gave herself every chance to do it. Even while experiencing the excruciating pain, she held her nerve and stood silent in the water.
The incident shows how much affection a mother has for her kids as well as how cruel a man can get. In a way, it’s good that the calf never had to see the cruelties of the man with her own eyes.
If you have the nerves to put yourself through it, google ‘elephant pineapple crackers’ and read more about it. I could read it only once and I almost collapsed.
